Summer changes the rhythm of everyday life. Longer days, road trips, patios and more time spent out and about all shape how Canadians move through the season, and radio continues to go along for the ride.

This Summer 2026 snapshot looks at how much time Canadians spent with radio, where listening happened, how habits shifted from weekdays to weekends, and the growing role of live radio streaming.

I am having many interesting conversations about People Panels. For those who know me, you know that I have a very strong and, I will state, “informed” opinion on this. In fact, several countries around the globe have measurement leaders who not only agree, but they will also fiercely debate with anyone who thinks otherwise.

Below is a scaled back and simplified summary of my position.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup was more than just another tournament. After years of anticipation, Canada stepped into the spotlight as co-host and played its first men’s World Cup match on home soil, delivering unforgettable action for Canadian soccer. The men’s national team gave fans across the country new reasons to watch, with record-setting performances, and a wave of national attention the sport has been building toward for years.

That momentum was reflected in audiences across the country. FIFA 2026 made headlines throughout the tournament, reaching 77% of the country, up from both 2022 and 2018. Hours tuned were also up compared to previous tournaments, showing that Canadians were not only reached in greater numbers, but spending more time with the games. The average viewer spent 15 hours this year watching the matches unfold.

Linear television once again reminded us of its ability to bring people together around the biggest moments in sports, news, award ceremonies and primetime entertainment. From the Super Bowl and NFL Playoffs to the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, live events played a major role in shaping the season. The Montreal Canadiens’ run to Round 3 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs also gave fans a major story to follow, marking the team’s deepest playoff run since 2021.

This spring, radio remained a meaningful part of Canadians’ everyday lives—at home, on the go, and everywhere in between. Out-of-home tuning was especially strong, with listening woven into commutes, errands, travel, and daily routines. Streaming also continued to play an important role, highlighting the many ways Canadians connect with radio throughout the day.

Canadiens’ 2026 Playoff Run Showcased Broad Market Reach and Viewer Engagement

The Montreal Canadiens gave fans a playoff run to remember in 2026, taking them on a thrilling journey through three hard-fought rounds for the first time since 2021. While the outcome was not what the team or fans had hoped for, one thing is clear: Canadians were all in.

Across Rounds 1 to 3, the Canadiens’ 19-game playoff run reached 22 million Canadians, with the average viewer tuning in for approximately 11 hours across the entire series. Engagement in Quebec Franco was especially strong with 81% of the market reached and the average viewer spending up to 19.5 hours with the series, well above the 13.7 hours captured during the 17-game run in 2021.
